Pencil grades explained
Adding shade to a drawing, helps create a contrast from light to dark. If you lay down a very dark colour next to a light or white tone, they are both enhanced, helping create a depth of field and good contrast. When you graduate a tone, working through a range of pencil grades this helps gives a more gentle shaded look.
HB:- This is the most common pencil, and gives a great mid tone, the lead is firm, and perfect for lighter shades or your first marks..
B Grading :- The lead gradually becomes softer moving through the B number. 2B is softer and darker than a HB. Whilst 4B, 6B and 8B, have increased softness. 8B being the softest and darkest. As the B number increases the softness of the pencil increases, giving the advantage of laying down darker tones. Use a soft pencil gently as it is more likely to crumble.
Having a selection of pencil grades, will make creating tonal contrasts easier.
