Nepalese Books & Paper

Nepalese Handmade Books & Paper — Ancient Craft from the Himalayas

Nepal has one of the world's oldest and most celebrated papermaking traditions, and every sheet and book in this collection carries that heritage. Made by hand in the Himalayan foothills using fibres harvested from lokta and mitsumata plants — both sustainable, renewable resources — these papers have a character, texture, and warmth that no machine-made paper can replicate.

What You'll Find Here

  • Lokta paper sheets — large format handmade sheets in natural and dyed colours, made from the bark fibre of the lokta plant found above 3,000 metres; available in light 30gsm and heavier 90gsm weights
  • Mitsumata paper sheets — delicate, translucent sheets made from mitsumata bast fibre combined with bamboo leaves, using the traditional Japanese nagashizuki method
  • Coloured lokta gift wrap — vibrant, pre-folded packs of handmade lokta sheets dyed using EU-standard dyes; beautiful for gift wrapping, bookbinding, and papercraft
  • Zig zag books — accordion-folded handmade books in square formats, perfect for miniature paintings, travel journals, and artist books

Why Nepalese Handmade Paper?

  • Sustainable & renewable — lokta and mitsumata plants are harvested above ground and naturally regrown every 3–4 years
  • Supports Himalayan communities — fibre collection and papermaking create valuable employment in the hill areas of Nepal
  • Vegan friendly
  • Suitable for printmaking, drawing, calligraphy, bookbinding, collage, gift wrapping, and mixed media
