Layering

Blending
An oil-based binder offers unique blending properties.The thick core of Derwent Lightfast allows for dense and even colour application.Work the pigment into the tooth of the paper with lighter colours or a solvent medium to even out the application to create a painterly effect.

Pressure
Controlling the pressure of the pencil is vital for smooth colour application. Light pressure deposits a minimum amount of pigment to the paper and is ideal for the first colour of a layering sequence, rendering light or creating delicate shadings. Normal pressure provides good application of colour to render mid values and tones, backgrounds and finer detailing. Use heavy pressure for dense colour application when burnishing and creating dark values at the last stages of layering.
